Chewing Tobacco Linked to 2.51 Lakh Deaths Globally in 2023, Study Reveals

A new study from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) reveals that chewing tobacco was linked to approximately 2.51 lakh deaths worldwide in 2023. South Asia bore the brunt, accounting for 84% of these deaths, with around 2.10 lakh fatalities. Globally, about 24.1 crore people aged 15 and above used chewing tobacco in 2023, a number that has not declined since 1990. The research, part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, also highlighted significant health risks including stroke and mouth cancer.

इंस्टीट्यूट फॉर हेल्थ मेट्रिक्स एंड इवैल्यूएशन (IHME) के एक नए अध्ययन से पता चला है कि 2023 में दुनिया भर में चबाने वाले तंबाकू से लगभग 2.51 लाख मौतें हुईं। दक्षिण एशिया पर इसका सबसे ज्यादा असर पड़ा, जो इन मौतों का 84% था, जिसमें करीब 2.10 लाख मौतें हुईं। 2023 में दुनिया भर में लगभग 24.1 करोड़ लोग, जिनकी उम्र 15 साल या उससे ज़्यादा थी, चबाने वाले तंबाकू का इस्तेमाल करते थे, और 1990 से यह संख्या घटी नहीं है। ग्लोबल बर्डन ऑफ डिजीज स्टडी 2023 के हिस्से के रूप में किए गए इस शोध में स्ट्रोक और मुंह के कैंसर सहित गंभीर स्वास्थ्य जोखिमों पर भी प्रकाश डाला गया।
