Brain's Neuronal Tug-of-War Decides Risk

Researchers have observed a 'tug-of-war' between rival neuronal groups in the brain's orbitofrontal cortex during tough decisions. Two neighboring areas in the OFC showed distinct activity patterns: one activated when pursuing rewards, the other when avoiding risks. For difficult choices, signals rapidly flickered between these regions before a decision was made. This study involved six participants and could help understand behaviors in conditions like anxiety and addiction.
