Nepal SC Orders Regulated Cannabis Cultivation Within 3 Months

Times of India · world

Fifty years after Nepal banned cannabis cultivation, the Supreme Court has directed the government to frame regulations within three months for controlled cultivation for medicinal, scientific, and industrial purposes. The court criticized successive governments for failing to implement the 1976 Narcotic Drugs (Control) Act, which already allowed limited regulated cultivation. This verdict could potentially open the door to a legal cannabis industry, offering new opportunities for farmers in mountainous regions where cannabis grows naturally. Recreational use remains illegal, with any wider relaxation of laws left to parliament.
