Invasive Rats Found On Five US Virgin Islands; Iguanas On One

Times of India · environment

A recent wildlife survey of six offshore islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands has revealed the presence of invasive species, posing a threat to native seabird populations. Preliminary findings confirmed black rats on five of the islands and green iguanas on one. These invasive animals can disrupt the delicate island ecosystems and prey on seabird eggs and chicks, potentially leading to population declines. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Island Conservation are collaborating on this project, with the results guiding future conservation efforts to protect these vital nesting grounds.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
