West Bengal's government has significantly revised its excise rules for issuing new liquor shop licenses in urban areas. New retail liquor shops in urban and municipal areas must now be located at least 500 meters away from educational institutions and religious sites, an increase from the previous 300-meter rule. In rural and non-municipal areas, this distance has been extended to one kilometer. The government has also allowed long-closed liquor shops to reopen under certain conditions, potentially reviving around 300 dormant outlets.
