A historic Brooklyn townhouse at 58 Joralemon Street, built in 1847, has served a secret purpose for over a century. In 1907, the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company purchased the property and gutted its interior to create a ventilation shaft and emergency exit for subway tunnels beneath the East River. This conversion was part of a plan to ensure adequate air supply and passenger safety in the tunnels. The facade was preserved to blend with the established residential neighborhood, concealing the extensive five-story underground structure.
