Yellowstone Lake Trout Removal Aids Native Cutthroat Trout Recovery

Hindustan Times · environment

Since 1994, invasive lake trout in Yellowstone Lake have devastated native cutthroat trout populations, reducing spawning numbers by up to 95%. A large-scale removal operation, involving extensive gillnetting, has been underway to reverse this ecological damage. By October 2024, nearly 4.9 million lake trout had been removed, leading to an estimated 90% decline in the adult lake trout population. This effort has allowed cutthroat trout to return to spawning streams, benefiting native wildlife like bears and eagles, though full recovery is still pending.
