Centre to Form Panel to Revisit UGC Equity Regulations After SC Stay

The Union government has informed the Supreme Court it is considering forming a committee to review the UGC's 2026 equity regulations. The Supreme Court had previously stayed these regulations in January due to concerns about vague provisions potentially leading to misuse and societal division. The court had advised the Centre to revisit the rules to ensure they protect all students' interests. The regulations, which mandate equal opportunity centres, have faced opposition from some groups who argue they are one-sided, while others support them for promoting inclusion.

केंद्र सरकार ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट को बताया है कि वह यूजीसी के 2026 इक्विटी नियमों की समीक्षा के लिए एक समिति बनाने पर विचार कर रही है। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने पहले जनवरी में इन नियमों पर रोक लगा दी थी क्योंकि इसमें अस्पष्ट प्रावधानों से दुरुपयोग और सामाजिक विभाजन की चिंताएं थीं। अदालत ने केंद्र को सभी छात्रों के हितों की रक्षा सुनिश्चित करने के लिए नियमों पर फिर से विचार करने की सलाह दी थी। समान अवसर केंद्रों को अनिवार्य करने वाले नियमों का कुछ समूहों ने विरोध किया है, उनका तर्क है कि वे एकतरफा हैं, जबकि अन्य लोग समावेशन को बढ़ावा देने के लिए उनका समर्थन करते हैं।
