Red Wolf Genes Found In Wild Canines On Texas Island

Hindustan Times · science

A 2018 study revealed red wolf genes in wild canines on Galveston Island, Texas, surprising scientists who had declared the species extinct in the wild by 1980. Red wolves, once widespread in the southeastern US, faced extinction by the 1970s due to cross-breeding and habitat loss. Researchers compared DNA from Galveston canines to various wolf and coyote samples, finding them genetically closer to captive red wolves. These findings suggest the persistence of red wolf genetic material, referred to as 'ghost alleles,' even after the species' presumed disappearance from the wild.
