UN Official Warns AI Could Deepen Global Inequality
Al Jazeera · world
A senior UN official has warned that artificial intelligence risks widening the gap between rich and poor nations, potentially exacerbating existing socioeconomic divides. Tomas Lamanauskas, deputy secretary-general of the ITU, highlighted that developing countries face significant barriers to AI adoption due to inadequate digital infrastructure and limited internet access. He noted disparities in AI usage, with only 16 percent of working-age people in developing nations using generative AI compared to 29 percent in developed countries. Bridging the digital infrastructure gap requires an estimated $2.8 trillion investment by 2030.
