Protesters Use Transport Blockades To Make Political Claims Harder To Ignore
Scroll · politics
Blocking transport services has long been a recognisable tactic in Indian protest politics, with farmers frequently blocking highways and unions organising 'chakka jams'. Rail roko agitations also have a history stretching back to the freedom movement. The underlying logic is that disrupting everyday circulation makes a political claim more difficult for the state to disregard. However, these tactics have also drawn criticism due to the inconvenience caused to ordinary travellers. The state has also historically restricted movement during protests, citing public order concerns.
