Digital certification authority eMudhra reported a compromise of private keys for eight intermediate certificates, sparking widespread criticism of cybersecurity measures. The IT Ministry stated the incident primarily affects eMudhra's global business, with a very limited impact on Indian sites, and accused some social media users of fear-mongering. A special team has been formed to investigate the breach. Cybersecurity agency CERT-In warned that compromised keys could enable attackers to issue fraudulent certificates and impersonate legitimate websites. eMudhra clarified that its infrastructure and Indian digital signature businesses remain unaffected.
