The Narikuravar community in Tamil Nadu has finally achieved Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in 2023, marking a significant victory after decades of struggle. Previously classified as denotified tribes, the community faced marginalisation and stigma associated with their traditional livelihoods. This recognition, recommended as early as 1965, unlocks access to education, job opportunities, and government schemes. Leaders like Karai R Subramanian and individuals like Sakthivel A have been instrumental in advocating for their rights, enabling a new generation to pursue professions like medicine and engineering.
