Indian Women's Cricket Pioneers Recall Historic First Test Match

Hindustan Times · sports

Fifty years ago, India played their first official women's Test match against the West Indies in Bengaluru on October 31, 1976. The match drew around 20,000 spectators, who paid to watch a team that played without financial rewards or adequate facilities. Captain Shantha Rangaswamy hit the first six by an Indian woman in international cricket, while Shubhangi Kulkarni took five wickets on debut. This pioneering generation laid the groundwork for today's professional cricketers enjoying BCCI contracts and WPL deals.
