Island Fox Saved By Removing Feral Pigs

An ambitious conservation project has saved the endangered Santa Cruz Island fox from extinction. Feral pigs, introduced in the 1850s, had grown to support a large golden eagle population. These eagles began preying on the island foxes, reducing their numbers by 95%. Over 5,000 feral pigs were removed between 2005 and 2006. Golden eagles were relocated, and bald eagles were reintroduced, allowing the island fox population to recover to over 1,300.
