Rabbits Introduced in 1874 Devastated Kerguelen Islands' Native Plants
Hindustan Times · environment
European rabbits introduced to the remote Kerguelen Islands in 1874 drastically altered the native plant life. A 2004 study found that sensitive species like Kerguelen cabbage and cushion plants disappeared from grazed areas, with Acaena magellanica taking over. Rabbit burrows also increased soil erosion, allowing non-native plants to spread. Even after eradication programs, recovery of native vegetation and soil fungal communities has proven to be slow, indicating long-lasting ecological damage.
