Fungus Develops Resistance to Human Immunosuppressant Drug

A fungus causing severe pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals has developed resistance to mycophenolic acid (MPA), an immunosuppressive drug used in organ transplant patients. Researchers found that MPA, intended to prevent organ rejection, unintentionally exerts pressure on the fungus. Six common mutations in the fungal gene for a similar enzyme were identified, with 86% of samples from transplant recipients showing mutations compared to 13% in controls.
