UN Rights Chief Turk Criticized by India for Delhi Remarks

Hindustan Times · india

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has drawn sharp criticism from India for his remarks on detentions during Delhi protests. India dismissed his concerns as misplaced and unwarranted. This follows similar actions by Turk in Bangladesh, where he intervened during 2024 student-led protests against the then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He had threatened to ban the army from UN peacekeeping missions if they intervened and called for the release of arbitrarily detained individuals. India suggests Turk is overstepping his mandate by pushing a personal agenda through these comments.
