His innings saw him surpass Sachin Tendulkar as the highest run-scorer in ODI chases, accumulating 8,741 runs in 169 innings. Former coach Ravi Shastri lauded the knock as invaluable given the difficult conditions, stating it was worth a century. Kohli also equalled Ricky Ponting's record for most ODI runs against New Zealand, further cementing his legendary status.
