Tamil Nadu Minister R Nirmal Kumar defended the state's short-term power tenders, attributing a 30% surge in demand to El Niño-induced heat. Power demand rose from 16,800 MW to 21,700 MW, a nearly 4,900 MW increase. Shortfalls in central allocations and wind generation also contributed to the strain. The minister stated the short-term tender is for October 15-31, aiming to procure 1,500 MW for peak hours to prevent power cuts during upcoming festivals.
