Supreme Court Allows Challenge to Great Nicobar Project Before Calcutta High Court

Business Standard · environment

The Supreme Court has declined to halt proceedings at the Calcutta High Court concerning the proposed Great Nicobar Island infrastructure project. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant directed the High Court to hear the matter expeditiously, rejecting the Centre's plea to stop the public interest litigation. The Centre had questioned the locus standi of the petitioner and cited prior National Green Tribunal proceedings. This decision allows for continued judicial scrutiny of the project's statutory process, including constitutional dimensions like tribal rights and cultural preservation.
