Omar stated, "Not to my knowledge," when asked about any familial connection, calling the claim "insane." Elmi, a British national, was married to Omar from 2009 to 2017 and is currently a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol. No public documentation has substantiated claims of a blood relation between them. Omar also had other marriages, including one to Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi.
