The Supreme Court has ruled that prolonged pre-trial detention cannot be used as punishment without a trial. It emphasized that the right to personal liberty and a speedy trial under Article 21 must be protected, even in cases involving serious financial allegations. The court granted bail to two former ministers accused in a corruption case related to tenders worth hundreds of crores under the Jal Jeevan Mission in Rajasthan.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने फैसला सुनाया है कि मुकदमे से पहले लंबी हिरासत को सज़ा के तौर पर इस्तेमाल नहीं किया जा सकता। कोर्ट ने इस बात पर ज़ोर दिया कि आर्टिकल 21 के तहत व्यक्तिगत आज़ादी और त्वरित सुनवाई के अधिकार की रक्षा होनी चाहिए, भले ही गंभीर वित्तीय आरोप लगे हों। कोर्ट ने राजस्थान में जल जीवन मिशन के तहत सैकड़ों करोड़ के टेंडर से जुड़े भ्रष्टाचार के मामले में आरोपी दो पूर्व मंत्रियों को ज़मानत दे दी।
