Rare Bangka Slow Loris, Feared Extinct, Rediscovered in Indonesia

Times of India · environment

A primate species, the Bangka slow loris, once feared extinct and not documented since the 1930s, has been rediscovered in Indonesia. Researchers identified over 90 individuals between 2015 and 2025 on Bangka island, indicating its survival despite habitat pressures. Wildlife rescues played a crucial role, with 86 rehabilitated lorises released back into suitable natural habitats. This discovery offers renewed hope for the critically endangered species, though further research is needed to assess its population status and ensure its long-term protection.
