The Supreme Court has stayed the execution of the death penalty for an Indian Mujahideen operative convicted in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts. The operative, Ahmed Bawa alias Abbu Abubakar Barelvi, had appealed against the Gujarat High Court's verdict, which upheld his death sentence. The blasts on July 26, 2008, killed 56 people and injured over 200. The High Court had previously affirmed the death sentences of 38 operatives, citing the large casualty count and the conspiracy's intent to spread terror.
