India Shelves Coal Import Plan Amid High Global Prices and Weak Rupee

Times of India · business

India has decided against mandating power plants to import coal to replenish dwindling stockpiles. This decision comes as elevated international prices and a weaker rupee have significantly increased the cost of overseas shipments. Policymakers are now focusing on increasing domestic production by Coal India Ltd and ensuring timely transportation by railways. The move follows a period of critically low coal inventories at power plants, exacerbated by higher electricity demand and reduced hydropower generation due to a poor monsoon.
