Burkina Faso Opens First Gold Refinery

Burkina Faso's military-led government has inaugurated its first gold refinery, Raffinor-BF, in the capital, Ouagadougou. This initiative aims to process more of the nation's mineral wealth domestically and increase state control over the important gold industry. Junta leader Ibrahim Traoré stated the goal is to refine all metals on-site, capturing the entire value chain. The refinery, costing over 11 billion CFA francs, will initially process 164 tonnes of gold annually. This move seeks to boost the landlocked country's economy and potentially reduce illicit gold trading that may fund insurgencies.
