Captain Smit Machchhar of flydubai flight FZ1073 sustained a depressed skull fracture after an axe attack by his co-pilot, Hammam al-Hammami. The co-pilot struck the captain from behind while he was looking forward during the flight. Captain Machchhar initially thought the blows were related to aircraft damage before realizing he was being attacked. Emergency surgery was performed in Saudi Arabia, and he is now receiving further treatment in the UAE. The Indian embassy reports he is making steady progress and regaining his health.
