Designer Revives 100-Year-Old Kathkuni Home Using 90% Recycled Materials

The Better India · lifestyle

Designer Vijyendra Thakur has restored a neglected century-old Kathkuni farmhouse in Chachogi, utilizing approximately 90% recycled materials. The traditional Himalayan building technique, which uses interlocking timber and stone without mortar, allows structures to withstand earthquakes. Thakur adapted the interiors for modern comforts while preserving the original character and verandas. The restored home now serves as a homestay, offering visitors a chance to experience traditional architecture and village life. This initiative is reviving interest in Kathkuni architecture, with locals now considering it for new builds.
