UN Reports Afghan Women Arrested For Dress Code Violations
DW World · world
UNAMA reported that Taliban authorities arrested or detained at least 52 women and one girl in Herat and Kabul between July and September 2026 for alleged dress code violations. Detentions occurred for not wearing a chador, having visible hair, wearing colourful scarves, or appearing in public without a male guardian. UNAMA expressed grave concern, stating these detentions violate women's rights and expose them to social stigma. The mission warned that the actual number of cases could be higher due to underreporting.
