Palo Alto, California, has completed a 500-foot horizontal levee designed to protect its shoreline from rising sea levels. This innovative structure uses treated wastewater to irrigate native plantings, creating a living ecosystem that provides habitat and reduces wave impacts. Unlike traditional steep levees, this broad, gently sloping landscape aims to adapt to sea-level rise by allowing marsh vegetation to migrate uphill.
