Iran's Oil Intermediaries Owe Government Billions Amid Sanctions

Al Jazeera · world

Iran's judiciary has stated that a network of oil intermediaries, known as "trustees," owes the government between 10 billion and 11 billion euros. This debt is equivalent to half of the projected oil revenue for the current fiscal year. The situation arises from an arrangement made in 2012 to circumvent US sanctions, where oil was entrusted to these intermediaries for sale. US officials view Iran's difficulty in accessing oil revenues as a sign their economic pressure campaign is succeeding.
