Tusker Electrocuted in Jalpaiguri, Fourth Elephant Death in a Month

Times of India · environment

An adult tusker has died from suspected electrocution in Jalpaiguri, marking the fourth elephant death in the region within a month. Char marks on the animal's trunk and a live wire found wrapped around it indicated electrocution. In previous incidents, elephants died after contacting live electric wires laid on the ground to protect paddy fields. Environmentalists attribute these deaths to the unchecked expansion of human settlements near forest areas, leading to increased man-elephant conflict as elephants raid human settlements and fields due to habitat loss.
