Hindustan Times · environment
North Carolina's Department of Environmental Quality sank the 106-foot tugboat Thomas Dann off Cape Lookout on August 1, 2024, to enhance an artificial reef. The vessel, built in 1981 and damaged by fire in 2016, was donated by Marinex Construction Co. to the state's Artificial Reef Program. It now joins two older ships and 1,700 tons of concrete at the AR-305 reef site, a popular spot for fishermen and divers. The program aims to create vital spawning and feeding grounds for marine life, supporting both commercial and sport fishing industries.
