Octopus Develops Ninth Arm After Injury, Scientists Observe Its Unique Usage

Aaj Tak · science

Scientists observed a common male octopus near Ibiza, Spain, whose one arm split into two branches after sustaining injuries, possibly from a predator attack. Initially, the octopus used its injured arms less, but over months, it began utilizing the new branches for hunting and exploring its surroundings. This behaviour suggests octopuses can adapt their limb usage following injuries. Researchers studied 24 videos and 6,000 images to understand this adaptation.
