China has imposed sanctions on the Communications Minister of Paraguay and the Foreign Minister of Belize. This action stems from the two nations strengthening their ties with Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province. Paraguay and Belize are among the 12 countries that maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The sanctions, however, are largely symbolic as these ministers typically do not travel to China.
