A Red-shouldered Hawk in Roanoke, Virginia, was found unable to fly after becoming excessively overweight. Weighing 910 grams, nearly double the typical weight for its species, the hawk's obesity was attributed to a diet of free-roaming chickens from nearby homes. Initially suspected of injury or poisoning, medical examinations revealed normal health but extreme fat accumulation. The hawk, nicknamed RSHA 26-2599, is now on a strict diet at a wildlife center and is expected to be released once it regains its ability to fly.
