96% of Coral Reefs Face Collapse by 2075 Due to Climate Change

Times of India · environment

A global assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) warns that 96 percent of shallow-water coral reef ecosystems face a critical risk of collapse by 2075. Rising ocean temperatures and increasingly severe marine heatwaves are identified as the primary drivers of this decline. Coral reefs, vital for marine biodiversity and coastal protection, support a quarter of all marine species. While the threat is escalating, experts urge accelerated conservation efforts rather than despair, noting corals' potential to recover.

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
