Sudan Acacia Plantations Improve Soil, Hold Less Water

Acacia senegal plantations in Sudan's drylands showed improved soil organic carbon and water-holding capacity as they aged, according to a 2018 study. Researchers compared plantations of varying ages with nearby grasslands at two sites in North Kordofan state. While older trees accumulated more carbon and enhanced soil's ability to retain water for plants, grasslands still maintained higher overall soil moisture.
