Klein Curacao Island Sees Bird Species Boom After Native Plant Restoration

Times of India · environment

Following the removal of invasive goats in the 1990s and cats in 2001, Klein Curacao island has undergone significant ecological recovery. Native plant restoration efforts, which took place between 2000 and 2005, have successfully revitalized the 130-hectare coral island. By 2022, surveys confirmed nine bird species breeding on the island, a dramatic increase from the single species previously documented. Nesting pairs also rose substantially, indicating a thriving ecosystem. This restoration highlights the positive impact of removing invasive species and reintroducing native flora.
