Supreme Court Protects Delhi Protesters' Liberty Against Arbitrary Detention

Hindustan Times · politics

The Supreme Court has directed that peaceful, unarmed protesters in Delhi can only be detained according to the "procedure established by law." This ruling addresses allegations of mass detentions and restrictions during a recent protest. The court emphasized that personal liberty cannot be curtailed merely by invoking public order, requiring all such restrictions to undergo legal and constitutional scrutiny. Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana also ordered the normal operation of metro and railway services, undisturbed internet connectivity, and permitted free movement, all subject to legal compliance.
