Sebi Reverts to VWAP Settlement for Derivatives After Market Chaos

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has revised its contentious closing auction session (CAS) framework, returning to the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) method for calculating settlement prices of stock and index derivatives on expiry days. This change, announced late Thursday, means derivatives will be settled using the VWAP of underlying stocks during the last 30 minutes of normal trading. The previous CAS rules, introduced in August, had faced strong criticism from market participants, leading to significant losses for derivatives traders due to low auction participation and uncertainty.
