Hungarian artist Norbert Olah, who is Romani, initially avoided his ethnic background in his work due to fears of being labeled. He felt the art scene often viewed Romani art as unsophisticated. However, as he matured, Olah found it increasingly difficult to ignore his personal story, especially given the political realities for Roma in Hungary. He has now made his identity a central theme in his art, working from his studio in Budapest.
