Meghalaya's Kongthong Village: Where People Communicate Through Musical Tunes

Times of India · interesting

Kongthong village in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district is known for its unique tradition where individuals communicate using personal musical tunes instead of words. Each person is given a unique melody by their mother at birth, known as Jingrwai Iawbei or 'Mother's Love Song'. This oral tradition, passed down through generations, signifies family, ancestry, and community. When a villager dies, their unique song also ceases to exist. The village was recommended by India's Ministry of Tourism for a UN World Tourism Organization initiative in 2021.
