Govt Halves Sugar Stock Limits to 1,000 Quintals Ahead of Festivals
Mint · business
The Indian government has significantly tightened sugar stockholding norms for dealers, reducing the permissible limit to 1,000 quintals and the holding period to 15 days. This measure aims to prevent hoarding and ensure sufficient supply to consumers during the upcoming festive season, which begins on October 11. The revised rules, effective from October 15 to November 30, are intended to help control rising sugar prices, which were about 20% higher than last year. A higher limit of 2,000 quintals is permitted for Kolkata and Assam due to logistical considerations.
