Japan's Core Inflation Surges Past 2% Target, BOJ Rate Hikes Now Likely
Economic Times Markets · stocks
Japan's core consumer inflation exceeded the Bank of Japan's 2% target in September, reaching 2.1% year-on-year. This marks the first time in nine months the target has been surpassed, driven by rising fuel costs, a weak yen, and strong AI demand. An index excluding food and fuel also rose to 2.4%, indicating broader price pressures. The data strengthens the case for potential future monetary tightening by the BOJ, despite expectations of unchanged policy at their upcoming meeting. Governor Kazuo Ueda has previously warned of inflation exceeding the target.
