Times of India · environment

What began in 1992 with two people and a cycle rickshaw has evolved into an 11-member team in Auroville, successfully diverting nearly 80% of collected waste from landfills. This initiative, known as EcoService, manages waste for the international township, which spans parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The team sorts hundreds of kilograms of waste daily, identifying materials for recycling, reuse, or processing. Residents are encouraged to segregate waste at home into multiple categories, facilitating further detailed sorting at the EcoService facility into as many as 82 categories.
