Illegal Dumping Ground Transformed into Thriving Wetland in Philadelphia Park

Times of India · environment

An illegal dumping ground at Philadelphia's FDR Park has been transformed into a 33-acre tidal wetland, earning a Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. Work began in 2022 to clear trash and invasive plants, followed by the planting of 7,000 native trees and the creation of tidal channels. This restored area now acts as natural infrastructure, absorbing stormwater, filtering pollution, and providing habitat for wildlife. The project, a partnership between multiple organizations, was partly funded by airport expansion mitigation efforts and a state grant.
