Helmet enforcement has significantly decreased in Chennai, with fewer checkpoints on city roads. This has led to a noticeable increase in motorists riding without helmets, and sometimes carrying multiple passengers. Fatalities linked to not wearing helmets have risen, with 25 deaths in the first six months of 2026, up from 21 last year. Across Tamil Nadu, 1,136 deaths in two-wheeler crashes were linked to helmet violations between January and June this year.
