Norway Fines Microsoft's Xandr $9.6 Million Over Grindr Data Sharing

Economic Times - Tech · technology

Norway's data protection authority has fined Microsoft's adtech unit Xandr 92 million crowns ($9.61 million) for unlawfully relaying sensitive data from Grindr users. Xandr shared data revealing users' sexual orientation to advertisers in automated ad auctions between July 2018 and April 2020. This is the largest fine issued by the Norwegian authority, targeting data middlemen rather than the app itself. The regulator stated companies trading in data cannot shift blame, noting Xandr assumed Grindr had consent without verification. Xandr has three weeks to appeal the decision.
